Obituaries

Paul Robert

Whitehurst

1961-1991

Many will be saddened to hear of Paul's death from AIDS December 8 in Akron.

He served as a leader in the HIV self-empowerment movement both in Ohio-where he was involved in the Northeast Ohio Task Force on AIDS and the Living Room program in Cleveland— and in Florida where he won a successful HIV-discrimination suit against Manor Care nursing homes.

As a Living Room Coordinator from March 1989 to April 1990, Paul was an articulate and impassioned advocate for people living with HIV. He was instrumental in organizing and speaking at the

Living Room opening as well as making

sure HIV-positive rights were protected in the Community AIDS Partnership's Data Consortium. Speaking in the media, at workshops and in public forums, Paul put a warm face and inspiring voice to the challenge of facing HIV.

Though he eventually left the Living Room in a well-publicized dispute, he left a legacy of personal commitment, organizational achievement and wry, endearing humor.

Paul leaves many area friends and relatives including his parents, sister and five brothers. Services were at St. Sebastion's in Akron on December 10.

Memorial gifts can be made to NEOTFA or Akron's Planned Parenthood AIDS Program.

Stan Cail 1954-1991

Stan passed from this life to one where he is free from AIDS on Thursday, December 19 at 8:50 a.m. He left a body tired from a long, brave battle and once again became happy, hunky, beautiful Stan.

He shared this moment with Amos, Juanita and Scott and we will miss him dearly.

All our love to our friends who have been there for us, whether in thought or deed.

We love you Stan.

A memorial service was held at the Pavilion at Edgewater Park on Sunday, January 5. Donations to be made to the Living Room.▼

Barbara Wilson, best known for her entertaining and politically incisive Pam Nilsen mysteries (Murder in the Collective, Sisters of the Road, The Dog Collar Murders) returns with her a comic thriller set in Barcelona, home of the celebrated architect Antoni Gaudi.

Gaudi Afternoon introduces the globetrotting and wisecracking Cassandra Reilly, who makes a living translating South American novels when not wandering about in Kyoto or Uruguay. While translating a magic realism novel about the search for a lost mother, Cassandra gets a call in London from San Franciscan femme fatale Frankie Stevens. Frankie's husband Ben has vanished without a trace, but Frankie thinks he's in Barcelona and she wants Cassandra to find him.

Cassandra is soon on the trail of Ben, as well as the mysterious foot the rapist April Schauer and a sax player reputed to be from Prague. From the seedy bars of Barcelona's red-light district to the spacious gardens of 'Gaudi's Parc Guell, Cassandra chases people of all persuasions and motives in this madcap caper where appearances are always deceptive.

It is sold for $8.95 by Seal Press, 3131 Western Ave., Suite 410, Seattle, WA 98121-1028.▼
